My Own True Family
Ted Hughes
1. Write the title of the poem " My own true family "
Ans:
Title
We always think of the welfare of our family.
We take every care that they are safe. But the
poet wants to say that we do not love trees and
cut them cruelly. So, when the boy went into
the oak wood in search of a stag, he was tied
to an oak-tree. He was threatened to be killed
if any more tree was felled. He would have
to plant two trees if one was chopped down.
The boy realised that trees were man's friends,
family. So, they should be protected. Hence, the
title is appropriate. Through this title he has
acknowledged his affinity with the natural world.
2.Write the substance or summery of the poem " My own true family "
SUBSTANCE
" My own true family "is a description of the magical experience of a young child in an oak wood. He was looking for a stag. By chance, he met an old woman in rags, she was unsteady and was holding a stick. It seemed that she cast a spell and said that she had stored the secret of the boy in her little bag. Then she started laughing loudly in an unpleasant way. The boy began to tremble in fear. She opened up her little bag and awakened him twice. He found himself surrounded by a group of oak trees staring at him and he found himself tied to a post. The group said that they belonged to the boy's own family. People cut down the trees, tear the leaves, and small plants but other people never reacted.
The boy, on behalf of all human beings, must
swear that they would not do so any longer.
Otherwise, he was to die. The boy would have
to swear whenever they felled an oak-tree, he
would plant two. Otherwise, black oak would
wrinkle over him. He would be grounded
among other oaks, his kins but he would be
unable to grow.
Having narrated the dream, the boy said that his outlook had totally been changed. He came back in the company of mankind, walked like a man but at heart he became a tree.
