    SUBSTANCE

The poem 'Fable' composed by Ralph Waldo Emerson, depicts a moral story. It tells about a talk between the proud mountain and the squirrel. During a quarrel, the mountain called Bun 'little prig.' The squirrel (Bun) who was witty enough to understand the pride of the mountain replied that all sorts of  biotic and abiotic things are required to maintain weather condition. Bun also tells that it is happy with its place on earth. To Bun, the mountain does not have the quality of being small. it also lacks the quality of being sportive and 'spry'. Bun recognizes the quality of the mountain to carry the whole forest upon its back and to provide a nice squirrel track. The squirrel believes that different types of talents are required to be wisely put for proper works of Nature. Bun remarks that like it the mountain can never crack a nut even though it is so enormous. The moral of the poem is that both big and small should work in unison for proper maintenance of natural environment.

2.Write  the title of the poem 'Fable'

    Ans.
    TITLE
A fable is a short story that teaches a moral lesson with animals as characters. Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem 'Fable' depicts proud mountain and a witty squirrel. The mountain is proud of its colossal size and treats the squirrel as a 'small prig'. However, the squirrel is intelligent enough to understand the limitations of the mountain. As a matter of fact, the mountain can never be as small as the squirrel. The mountain is a part of Nature and the squirrel is also an integral part of Nature. While the mountain is a part of abiotic part of Nature, the squirrel represents its biotic part.
While the squirrel is full of sprightliness and endless energy, the mountain is motionless as the great statue of 'Colossus'. The squirrel believes that 'talents differ'. The squirrel wisely comments that it may not carry the forest on its back like the mountain, but the mountain is also unable to crack a nut like the squirrel. As the poem has depicted an animal character, squirrel and its argument with the mountain, imparting a moral teaching, it has been aptly called 'fable'. Therefore, the title 'Fable' is justified.
